New to Mahjong?

Start Here

You don’t need any Mahjong experience to be part of Pacific Mahj. Here’s a simple path from wondering what the game is to feeling ready to pull up a chair.

1

What is Mahjong?

Mahjong is a social tile game played around a table, usually with four players. There’s strategy and skill to learn, but there’s also plenty of conversation, laughter, and time spent together. You don’t need to understand every rule before you begin.

2

What do I need?

To get started, mostly curiosity and a willingness to learn. A Mahjong set and card are used during play, but you don’t need to rush out and buy everything before your first experience. A host or teacher can help you understand what you’ll need.

3

How do I learn?

Start with the basics and build from there. Pacific Mahj tutorials and beginner-friendly opportunities can help you become comfortable with the tiles, the Charleston, building a hand, and the rhythm of a game—one step at a time.

How do I find my first game?

When you feel ready, browse Pacific Mahj events and look for a game that feels right for you. The goal isn’t to arrive as an expert—it’s to find welcoming people, keep learning, and enjoy your time around the table.
